In no particular order; memorable places, photographs
Downtown Baghdad, about 1987. Minaret in the background is the Khulifa Mosque. The minaret is the only surviving part of the structure that dates back to before the Mongol sack of the city, 1258.Datong street scene, Shanxi, China, 1990
Mt. Baker (altitude, 10, 781 feet) from High Pass, Summer 2024 photo: km
Maria Callas and her then-husband, Giovanni Battista Meneghini, 1947 (?), Piazza Populi, Verona, outside the Roman amphitheater. I love this photo of her. The pic is part of an exhibit within the amphitheater. I came upon the photo October 2024.
Wall and gate of Ninevah, northern Iraq. I believe this is of the western wall, about 1988.
Cafe des Nattes (“Cafe of the Mats”), Sidi Bou Said, Tunisia, pencil and watercolor by Sean O’Donoghue, 1992. The cafe was established in 1922. The village is a must-see locale north of Tunis.
Plain of Giza, Egypt. The pyramid of Cheops (the largest one) is in the background. I like this pic because it is taken from the old cafe, now torn down, but which was on the southeast side of the pyramid. The Egyptian government has tried several policies regarding the area of the Pyramids and Sphinx. Originally, you could simply walk around the place unattended. Then they built a guard post and charged admission to the whole zone. I wish they had left the cafe there. The photo says, “Jan 1990.” But the pic may have been taken Dec 1989.
